04.26 mix

A special edition of the monthly mix in honour of last month’s album release. This sequence features selections from my False Balance sonic mood-board, a playlist of references I compiled to accompany my demos and production ideas for the third album. For the previous album, I sent my reference selections for each track out to the musicians in advance of our studio session. This time we listened to them together in the control room right before heading into the live room to record, as I wanted the sessions to feel as in-the-moment as possible. A bit of a “method acting” approach, in alignment with the album’s concept.

A Commotion - Feist

Banged And Blown Through - Saul Williams

Sunday Morning - Margo Guryan

I Miss America - Slutever

Poppies - La Luz

Let’s Submerge - X-Ray Spex

Every Day Is Exactly the Same - Nine Inch Nails

Doom - Dilly Dally

To Be a Ghost… - Jeff Rosenstock

Consolação - Elizeth Cardoso

I enrolled in Sasami Ashworth’s School of Song workshop for the month of April and had the most fantastic time meeting and talking shop with fellow artists from around the world. Sasami was incredibly generous in her teaching, sharing valuable insights on structuring one’s creative practice and multi-faceted approaches to music-making.

The whole experience was an important reminder of how connecting with others is the whole point. It’s easy to get caught up in the lonely internal world of making art, but so much of the inspiration and energy to keep the creative wheels turning exists outside that solitary realm.
